JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — Celebrated songwriter and composer Denny Chasmala has expressed his disappointment with singers Lyodra and Andien for performing his songs at events without seeking prior permission.

Chasmala, affectionately known as Dencas, believes that obtaining consent is a simple process, especially with today’s readily available technology.

“Regarding Andien and Lyodra, I don’t necessarily mind them using my songs, but they didn’t ask for my permission. It’s as easy as sending a WhatsApp message,” Denny stated during a recent interview in Senayan, Central Jakarta.

He emphasized that seeking permission should also include extending appreciation, whether through a simple thank you or some form of compensation.

“If Andien or Lyodra receive substantial payment for their performances, they should remember me. They can offer whatever they deem appropriate,” Denny explained. “However, if the payment is nonexistent, or perhaps insufficient, then they shouldn’t use the songs.”

The creator of the hit song “Berharap Tak Berpisah” couldn’t hide his feelings of disappointment. He pointed out that artists performing his songs derive economic benefits and gain audience attention.

“They gain financially, and they have audiences singing my songs. At the very least, a simple ‘Mas Denny Cas, thank you for letting us use your song yesterday’ would be a great form of appreciation,” Denny remarked.

Denny contrasted this with the respectful behavior of café musicians who often seek permission before performing his songs, even offering royalty payments.

“Regular bands or café bands often use my songs. They still show respect. They ask, ‘Om Dencas, we often perform your songs every Saturday and Sunday when we play. Thank you. How much should we pay you?'” Denny recounted.

However, Denny usually declines these payments, understanding the financial constraints faced by café musicians, who may not earn much.

“I usually respond by asking how much they are getting paid. If their earnings are low and they can’t afford to pay me, then I tell them not to worry about it,” Denny added.
