Yamaha Gear Ultima 125 Hybrid has arrived as the newest addition to PT Yamaha Indonesia Motor Manufacturing (YIMM)’s scooter lineup for this year. Touted as the successor to the Gear 125, this model boasts a range of noteworthy upgrades and distinctions.
The Gear Ultima 125 Hybrid embraces the concept of a ‘Multi-Purpose Scooter’, emphasizing functionality and practicality while maintaining an accessible price point. This makes it an ideal choice for families seeking a versatile ride.
Yamaha Gear Ultima 125 Hybrid Design
Let’s delve into the overall design. The front fascia features an LED headlight for both low and high beams. The turn signals remain separate, a design cue reminiscent of the previous Yamaha Gear 125 model.
Yamaha has skillfully incorporated black plastic cladding accents, commonly seen on SUVs or crossovers. This design choice gives the Gear Ultima 125 Hybrid a more robust and rugged appearance.
Moving to the rear, the taillight design is relatively conventional, typical of entry-level scooters, utilizing standard bulbs. However, the updated 110/70-R13 tire profile, both front and rear, gives the scooter a more substantial stance.
Dimensionally, the Gear Ultima 125 Hybrid measures 1,850 mm in length, 685 mm in width, and 1,075 mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 1,280 mm, a ground clearance of 135 mm, and a seat height of 750 mm.
New Blue Core Hybrid Engine
A significant change lies in its powertrain, now equipped with a 125 cc Blue Core Hybrid engine. The Gear Ultima 125 Hybrid becomes the third Yamaha model to utilize this engine, following the Fazzio and Grand Filano.
Unsurprisingly, the power output figures, according to factory specifications, mirror those of the Fazzio: 6.2 kW (approximately 8.3 horsepower) at 6,500 rpm and 10.6 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm.
Yamaha has yet to release official fuel consumption data. However, given the shared powertrain with the Fazzio, we anticipate similar figures. Our previous tests with the Fazzio yielded fuel efficiency in the range of 70-80 km/liter.
The hybrid technology employed isn’t a strong hybrid system in the traditional sense. Instead, it more closely resembles a mild hybrid setup, perhaps even smaller in scale.
This 125 cc Blue Core Hybrid engine is paired with a Smart Motor Generator (SMG), managed by the Starter Generator Control Unit (SGCU) within the Engine Control Unit (ECU), along with a battery.
Unlike even mild hybrid systems, which incorporate an additional battery, the Blue Core technology from Yamaha relies solely on the existing battery. However, its core function remains the same: providing power assist (Electric Power Assist Start).
This system assists the engine’s initial acceleration for the first 3 seconds by combining power from the engine and the electric power assistant. This is particularly beneficial during acceleration on inclines.
Practicality Aspects
Beyond cosmetic enhancements and the new engine, the Yamaha Gear Ultima 125 Hybrid also sees improvements in practicality. This aligns with its target segment: daily use and mobility.
Practicality enhancements include simple features such as open storage compartments on both sides of the front dashboard, ideal for carrying items like water bottles. It also includes a charging dock for devices like smartphones.
The rider’s footwell features two luggage hooks, complete with a locking mechanism to prevent items from falling while riding. Yamaha has even designed dedicated footrests for child passengers in the rear.
Perhaps the most unique feature, and possibly a first for scooters in its class, is a handle bar that can serve as a mount or hook for carrying items in the rear. Additionally, there’s an 18.6-liter under-seat storage compartment and a 5.1-liter fuel tank.
Features, Including Y-Connect
Exclusively on the Gear Ultima 125 Hybrid S, Yamaha integrates a connectivity feature that links to users’ Android or iOS smart devices via the Y-Connect application. This makes it the most affordable YIMM model equipped with this feature.
Consequently, only the S variant features a digital meter panel displaying notification logos for incoming messages or phone calls. Other distinguishing details include a digital clock, hazard lights, and the Stop & Start System (SSS) function.
Price
The Gear Ultima 125 Hybrid is available in two variants: the S type, priced at Rp 21.5 million, offered in Dark Grey and Silver. The Standard type is available in Dull Blue, Sand, Red, and Black, priced at Rp 19.9 million (OTR) Jakarta.
